Do you go to conferences in your industry? I spent the early years in my career wondering what the real value was and living with the misunderstanding that it was only about what I could learn at a specific session. As I’ve grown in my career and as I’ve been to many different types of conferences through the years, I’ve learned that it’s really about what I put into it.
What am I going to focus on?
What situations am I going to insert myself into in order to gain better understanding of something?
Who should I meet to make my network stronger?
What are the takeaways that I most hope to achieve?
Today I’m writing over at the Monster Thinking blog about all these things. Be sure to click through and check it out. Then share any conference tips I’ve missed. And, if you happen to be attending the upcoming SHRM 2011 Annual Conference, let me know so we can connect!
SHRM invited me to come to the event and I am looking forward to putting my conference plan in action. I’ll be sitting in the back row tweeting and writing to share my take on the events with you. This is the first SHRM Annual that I’m attending so I know what it’s like to watch it from a distance. If you want to attend but can’t, tell me what session you’d most like to hear about and I’ll cover it for you.

Hi, Trish. If you have room in your SHRM schedule Monday afternoon or Tuesday, I’d like to meet you. My research assistant, Lynette, met you at HRevolution and raved about the event (I’m sorry I had to miss it). Send me an email or tweet @DerekIrvine.
